Throughout their stay in the Army barracks in Crickhowell, the players were dressed in Army kit and put through their paces with a two day set of activities including team building games, command tasks, assault courses and patrols as well as an overnight stint camping outdoors where they built their own shelters and prepared meals from ration packs.

The 'Look at Life' Course is a scheme run by the Army to teach practical skills as well as improving ability to work in teams and up confidence levels. It also gave the players a chance to experience Army life for themselves.

The first two days of Blues Quest were for 60 under 16's Blues Academy players and the second two days were for 30 under 18 players. Both 'Quests' were split into two teams, divided by their Cardiff Blues region, North and South.

Major Colin John MBE from the Armed Forces Careers Office said: "The players arrived with us not knowing what to expect from the course, they knew they had to bring a wash kit and the rest would be supplied. The Army offers an experience like no other and, on that basis, we believe that the Army Courses should be no different.

"The aim of the two day course was to give an insight to Army life and the sorts of challenges soldiers face. Rugby can play a big part in Army life and there are plenty of opportunities to play competitively at a very high standard all over the world. It wasn't easy for them but they managed it and finished so well done!

"The courses are great for students who are thinking about joining the Army as it gives them a good taste of what to expect. But in the same vein, it's also a fantastic opportunity for people from all walks of life as they learn new skills, improve in confidence and experience new things.

"There is a fantastic range of career paths available in the Army with an option to suit everybody. There are also opportunities for training, development and learn new skills - there is no other job like it."

Gethin Watts, Blues Academy Manager said: "Despite the weather our academy and age grade players had a fantastic time at the Army barracks in Crickhowell. We would like to thank all those involved for their cooperation and generosity and I'm sure that the practical skills learnt by the youngsters will stand them in good stead. We are all looking forward to the new season our academy sides go from strength to strength."
