Peter Hayward, 36, from Newbridge, realised that he had won the life-changing sum while taking a much-deserved tea break from his job as a carpenter after shovelling tons of sand on a building site that morning.

Peter ad bought the scratchcard while stopping to buy his lunch at his local shop. He originally asked for a different card but his fortunes took a lucky twist of fate when the retailer had difficulty getting hold of it and Peter picked the Aqua Scratchcard out instead.

Peter then returned to work where he scratched the card. But rather than celebrate his win in try-scoring style, laid-back Peter mulled over the amazing win on the building site before eventually taking the winning scratchcard to his mother's house to check that his eyes weren't deceiving him.

Peter, who has a 10-year old son, has been living at home with his mother Victoria, and stepfather Robert to save money, but is planning to use the win to invest in a home of his own.

Rather than splash his winnings on a new home, Peter is keen to look out for a bargain property that he can renovate with his skills, and says that the memories of the difficult last few months will ensure that he enjoys his new found wealth sensibly.

He says: "I have been a carpenter and site manager all of my life and the last few months have been extremely difficult for everyone in the trade. Winning this money couldn't have come at a more perfect time for me.

"Things were difficult as work was slowing down, and rather than manage sites I was getting my hands dirty and working as a carpenter again. This win will make such a huge difference to my life and my family's."

"My son thought that I was joking when I told him that I had won, so I hope to treat him to tickets to watch his favourite team play plus I really enjoy watching the Cardiff Blues, so I'm planning on getting along to the new stadium to watch them play next season."

Also on Peter's shopping list is a flash new car to replace the Renault Clio that he currently shares with his mum: "I'm torn at the moment between a BMW 3 Series or an Audi TTS. I've already been window shopping and the thought that I can now buy something like that outright is amazing!
