This second clash brings together two sides who have performed well in cup competitions this season. Cardiff Blues qualified as top seeds in the Heineken Cup after winning six games on the spin, including back-to-back wins against Biarritz and also doing the double over Gloucester. Northampton Saints have also been unbeaten throughout the European Challenge Cup Pool phase, en route to their own Quarter Final.
Cardiff Blues are currently in 7th place in the Magners League table, and have won their last four matches in all competitions, albeit with these fixtures spread out over a two month period. The Blues have appeared in one previous semi-final match, losing to the Ospreys, 10-27, at Millennium Stadium in the EDF Energy Cup on 24 March 2007. The Blues have a superb record against English teams, remaining unbeaten in the last ten such encounters since losing 20-42 at Leicester in the EDF Energy Cup on 3 November 2007.
Northampton Saints reside in 8th spot in the Guinness Premiership, and are the only one of the four semi-finalists in the EDF Energy Cup who have played at the Ricoh Arena before; doing so during their 13-30 defeat to Wasps in the semi-final of the Heineken Cup on 22 April 2007. The Saints have won their last four "domestic" cup semi-final matches since the 10-25 reversal to Saracens at Franklin's Gardens at this stage in the 1997/98 event. Northampton have won four of their last five games against Welsh teams, and two out of their last five in all competitions.
The two sides have never previously met, with the exception of a pre-season fixture at the Arms Park at the start of this season, which the home team won 43-13. Read Match report here>>
In the other fixture form favours the Welsh side, the Ospreys. Gloucester, who reside in 2nd place in the Guinness Premiership, have won just one of their last six "domestic" cup semi-finals since 1990: 16-11 over Leicester at Kinsgholm on 29 March 1997.
This season represents the first time that Gloucester have progressed beyond the pools since the EDF Energy Cup first introduced group stages in season 2005/06. Gloucester have won their last four EDF Energy Cup matches since losing 26-29 at Wasps on 4 November 2007. The Cherry & Whites only previous defeat to a Welsh side in this competition was to the Ospreys, 19-49, at Liberty Stadium on 29 September 2006.
Ospreys, who currently lie in 3rd spot in the Magners League table, have won just two of their last five games in all competitions. The reigning EDF Energy Cup holders are bidding to make it to the Twickenham final for the third year running, but their loss at London Irish in the pool phase ended a seven match winning run in this competition. Last season the two teams traded home victories in the Heineken Cup pool.
In total, the two sides have met on four previous occasions with honours even at two wins apiece. Their two prior encounters in the EDF Energy Cup ended 23-7 in favour of Gloucester at Kingsholm on 1 October 2005, and 49-19 to Ospreys in Swansea on 29 September 2006.
