Cardiff land DC Thomas Cup

Champions Cardiff retained their DC Thomas Cup crown in a thrilling final against Llanelli at the Millennium Stadium.

The final of the U11 competition, proved a wonderful curtain-raiser to Saturday's Pontypridd v Neath Konica Minolta classic an hour later. Cardiff won 19-5, by three tries to one, to prove themselves the best U11 team in Wales for the second successive time, they beat Bridgend last year.

But Llanelli ran them close and played their part in a wonderful encounter of skill and style. The game was a credit to the teams, their coaches and the Welsh Schools RU who worked hard to put the match on at the Millennium Stadium.

The youngsters were presented with their trophies by David Pickering, chairman of the WRU, and Paul Abbandonato, Head of Sport at the Western Mail. Many Wales stars, including Terry Holmes, Robert Jones, Neil Jenkins, Rob Howley, Gavin Henson and Michael Owen, had their first taste of the National and Millennium Stadiums in the final of the DC Thomas Cup and speak of its special place in their careers.

Cardiff were set on the way with a thrilling try by right wing Gabriel Davies, who ran fully 50 yards to race over. And though Llanelli scored a fine try, Cardiff crossed twice more to clinch victory. Captains Matthew Corfield of Cardiff and Llanelli's Matthew Havard led by example in a game which was a credit to the sides.
