The Newport pack were clearly a well drilled outfit and the forward battle was eagerly contested. Cardiff were guilty of taking the ball into the contact area in an upright manner and the defensive qualities of the home side saw the held the ball up regularly, this suffocating possession to the backs.

The Cardiff pack displayed naivety in defence and were penalised for entering rucks and mauls from the side on too many occasions. This gave Newport plenty of first phase possession, but the dominant Cardiff backs ensured that each penalty move was quickly thwarted. Cardiff were 12 nil up at the half time mark and the score line did not reflect the dominance of the away side.

The stubborn Newport defence gradually gave way after numerous attacks, and a superb 40 metre run saw Lloyd Hopkin (Llanishen Fach) race over the line. Cardiff would have benefitted from shifting the ball wide to the wings more often and will have to work at that side of their game if they are to compete with stronger district sides in Wales.Jessie Lipitz Robic (Mynydd Bychan) and captain Elliot Rees (Coryton) were inspirational, both in attack and defence.

Wing Callum Bricknell (Herbert Thompson) was a continual threat to the Newport defence and Mathew Hopkins (also Herbert Thompson) also made the most of his opportunities. Props Theo Warren (Cathedral) and Kane Hockin (Trowbridge) took some stopping with ball in hand and Jason Martin (Bryn Hafod) was a constant thorn in the Newport side due to his never say die attitude. Andrew Detorres (Bryn Deri) showed superb hands and pace when entering the line and his angles of attack made spaces for Oliver Joyce (Creigiau) and Jerry Casserly (Roath Park) to work their magic in midfield.

A far more fluent second half from the Cardiff side saw the final score with 28 unanswered points.
