Outside half and new recruit Luke Fish (St. Albans) kicked off and the much changed Cardiff side immediately took the early initiative. Following pressure from the back row of Cameron James (Rumney), Skipper Sydney Blackmore (Llandaff CW) and William Brinkley (Cathedral), the Pontypool scrum half fed poor ball back to his backs. The ball was gathered by the inside centre who made ground, but Cardiff second row Tom Candlin (Rhiwbina) stole the ball from an ensuing ruck. A slight knock on gave possession back to the Pooler forwards, but once again Cardiff pressure saw the away side try to scramble the ball away into touch. An unsuccessful clearance saw the ball find Cardiff prop Sam Brinkworth. He needed no second invitation to find the try line taking four of the defence over with him. Converted by Liam Free (Glyncoed).

From the kick off Pontypool secured possession, but a spilled ball saw advantage played and the Cardiff side return to the heart of the Pooler half. Hooker Kai Laferla (Albany) showed his class and pace with a number of barnstorming runs that allowed Luke Fish feed the ball along his back line where Teri Morgan Gee (Rumney), Callum Bricknell (Herbert Thompson), Joshua Rodgers (Cathedral) and Joel Crocker (Baden Powell) began to wreak havoc with the Pooler defence. Their angles of running, support play and footwork were simply outstanding.
From a scrum Liam Free spotted a blindside gap. Superb strength saw him shrug off the attentions of the opposition back row, then float the ball to Teri Morgan Gee. Gee hit the line at speed, split the defence in two and scored under the posts. Free converted.

Pontypool A 0 Cardiff A 14

Seven half time changes to the Cardiff side saw the pattern of play disrupted for the first 10 minutes. Pontypool rallied and worked tirelessly in an effort to break down the resilient Cardiff defence. Sydney Blackmore led the way in thwarting a number of moves, and Breandan Nap (Cathedral) was far more vocal in organising his defensive line. Lloyd Hopkin and Michael Thomas (both Llanishen Fach) both made early telling tackles that caused the ball to be spilled. Now composed, Cardiff once again began to assert themselves on their opposition.
An offside saw Cardiff awarded a penalty and a neat forward move allowed Elliot Rees (Coryton) to make good ground. The pack rucked cleanly offering scrum half Free quick ball. Cardiff were able to capitalise on this through centre Croker's vision. He drew two defenders and released wing Connor Martin (St. John's College). Martin beat his opposite winger and three other desperate tackles to sprint a full 60 yards to score (no spectators dog in sight this week to prevent the try!). Nap converted from wide out.

With their tails up, the Cardiff side were ruthless in their continued efforts to pressure the Pontypool side into making mistakes. Kane Hockin (Trowbridge), Sam Scanlon and Tom Edwards (both Creigiau) led from the front in securing more ball for the Cardiff back line and it was turn over ball from Edwards that once again saw Cardiff turn defence into attack. Connor Martin, picked up the ball, saw space and sprinted into the Pontypool half to score. Another excellent Cardiff performance.
