Warburton leads Lions to victory in second Test

1st July 2017

Sam Warburton led the British and Irish Lions to a famous 24-21 victory over New Zealand in the second Test at Westpac Stadium on Saturday.

The Cardiff Blues back row played a key part in the breakdown and contact area, as Owen Farrell landed a late penalty to seal the victory for Warren Gatland’s side at Wellington.

Taulupe Faletau and Conor Murray scored vital tries during the second half as Farrell secured 14 points from the boot.

Another crucial moment came in the first half, as All Blacks’ centre Sonny Bill Williams was sent off for a dangerous tackle.

Warburton, who becomes the first Lions captain since 1993 to record a win over the All Blacks, believes his side must back up the victory during next week’s series decider.

"I'll be happy next week when we bring the Test series home,” said Warburton.

“It's only half a job done. One apiece now, effectively we've only played two half. It's great we've got it to 1-1, we want to take it to a decider at Eden Park.

"We've got to win the Test series. It's great that we got it to 1-1 but still a lot to work on. We gave away far too many penalties in the second half.

"We've got to up it next week. The one disappointing thing was the discipline.

“To score a try from a wide play, from Toby to bring us back into it, it shows we're willing to play.

“I was pleased the boys didn't shut up shop, we were brave and took those risks. We look forward to next week we've got an epic battle on our hands."
