Remembrance Rugby for Royal British Legion

6th November 2014

Serving military personnel from the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force Ladies rugby teams face Cardiff Blues Ladies at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park on Friday evening (kick-off 7.30pm).

2014 is the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War giving the game added significance. All members of the Combined Services team have deployed around the world, with many putting their lives on the line for their country.

Hoping to build on the surge in support and interest in Women's rugby since the World Cup this Summer and to raise funds for the Royal British Legion, both sides are fired up for the contest.

Combined Services Captain and Sportswoman of the year Jane Leonard, flanker for both Wasps and England can't wait to get on the pitch and said: "The Combined Services Remembrance match is something special. We take enormous pride in representing all three services, past and present. The game itself is an act of remembrance.  Wearing the poppy on your chest drives that home.

"The ladies game is always well supported but, with Cardiff full of fantastic rugby fans, this year promises to be bigger and better than ever. It's a shame there can only be one a year. I wish there were more. The buzz on the day will be indescribable."

Some of the greatest names in world women's rugby will be on the pitch including Sian Williams of the Royal Air Force who has represented Wales at the World Cup this Summer and Wales and Royal Signals back Chantelle Miller.

The ladies are just back from representing the Combined Services on BT Sport's Rugby Tonight and are eager to put the tactics demonstrated on the show with Glasgow Warriors captain Alastair Kellock and presenters Martyn Bayfield, Ben Kay, Brian O'Driscoll and Matt Dawson to use.

In addition to internationals Leonard, Williams and Miller the full team sheet includes eleven Women's Premiership players.

Supporters are advised that the game is FREE ENTRY but donations to the Royal British Legion on the night are appreciated.
