Boss prepares for massive Munster clash

26th October 2014

Director of Rugby Mark Hammett has urged his Cardiff Blues to take the confidence gained from claiming maximum points in Europe back into the big home Guinness PRO12 clash with Munster Rugby.

Cardiff Blues entertain the Irish province at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park on Saturday (kick-off 5.15pm) in an encounter that Hammer admitted was ‘massive’ for his team.

Blues claimed back to back bonus point wins in Europe by dispatching Grenoble and Femi-CZ Rugby Rovigo.

But Hammer is under no illusions as to the size of the task against Munster – who defeated Saracens in Europe this weekend – and knows his Blues now need to build on the confidence gained in recent weeks.

“We are not going to get carried away by the Rovigo result, but this is a confidence booster and we have to use that,” he said.

“We have got a massive game now back at home against Munster before the LV=Cup kicks-off.

“It’s a big end to the first round of league fixtures before we start the LV-=Cup. It does culminate for us and we will see where we are collectively as a group.”

Several Blues players will now head into international duty and Hammer acknowledged both teams would make changes before Saturday’s showdown in Cardiff.

“We will sit down and look at see where we are in terms of selection,” he said. "The international window kicks in now and that will mean that we lose some players but we also might have some back in. There will be changes.

“We are looking ok in terms of injuries, but that is always touch wood and cross fingers.

“Very good can turn very bad in a week, even without a game, but that is sport. But the boys are well focused on their recovery routines and getting back out there for the Munster game.”
