Redrow Homes Blues Cup Draw

The draw for the Redrow Homes Blues Cup has generated some local derbies while teams who had byes in the first round will also be looking to make their mark in the competition.

The game of Round 1 was the return of last year's U12 finalist Abercwmboi and Penarth in the U13 age group.

This fixture epitomised everything that is good in this Redrow Homes Blues cup 1st round tie. This was a repeat of last seasons under 12s final. Both teams were fully committed, passionate and despite the low scoreline (0-7) there were some great all round skills on display.

A huge level of thanks and special mention must go to Pro12 referee Neil Hennessy whose willingness to referee in the competition was very much appreciated by both sets of teams. His contribution and empathy made a huge difference to the game.

Both sides showed great defence qualities. Abercwmboi's William Smith was instrumental at the breakdown and together with the centre partnership of Kai Jones and Lewis Gough they caused constant problems for the visitors.

Despite Abercwmboi's dominance in the first half they were also kept on their toes by the strong running of Penarth's No.8 Evan Lloyd and the silky running skills of Drew Musa and Nick Hague Jones.

It was Penarth's Matt Wiltshire who actually crossed for the only try of the game. A miss tackle out wide by Abercwmboi resulted in the Penarth full back rounding two would be defenders before finishing under the posts. Musa converted.

Abercwmboi threw everything at Penarth. But the visitors managed to hold on to secure their place in the second round.

The Blues Cup committee have come to a decision based on the best interests of the competition and have extended the playing window for the 1/4 finals to SUNDAY MARCH 1st.

Part of the reason for this is the fact there were a large number of games cancelled last weekend due to the inclement weather which is of course unavoidable.

This new dates takes into account the forthcoming 6 Nations weekend in Scotland which may impact on coach availability and half term which impacts on player availability due to holidays or school trips.

Teams who have had fixtures cancelled are advised to make early contact with their opponents and make arrangements for the 1st. Please note all pathway rules apply and run parallel with the competition rules. If games are moved to school pitches whereby some maybe smaller than club pitches, both teams need to agree prior to KO.

If in any circumstance a drawn home team cannot find a pitch and the away team can then the fixture is to be switched.
