Coaching Development

The WRU Coach Development Department operates within the Blues Region a structured UKCC Coach Education Program.

This gives coaches the opportunity to achieve the minimum coaching qualification relevant to their coaching requirements.

The WRU Coach Education Department aim to provide all new coaches entering the game a positive initial learning experience that will encourage them to develop themselves further and provide them with the knowledge and skills to coach safely and effectively.

UKCC Level 1 in Coaching Rugby Union

As of Sept 2013 The Level 1 coaching award was been split into two different courses.

Level 1 Coaching Children is aimed at those coaches who coach from age 7 to 13. This course includes the TAG Leaders Award and IRB Rugby Ready and has been specifically designed to provide coaches with an introduction to the game of rugby union, safe practices and coaching in line with the pathway.

Alternatively there has also been designed a Level 1 for those coaching under 14's to senior. This also includes IRB Rugby Ready and designed to provide coaches with an introduction to the game of rugby union and the principles and practice of safe, ethical and effective management.

Entry Requirements for both Level 1's: Minimum Age 18

The course is 21hrs in duration (2 evenings and 2 full days) (16hrs on course, 5hrs home study) cost £140

The course is a competence based course and involves on-course appraisal

The course involves both classroom and outdoor practical sessions.

Coaches are expected to participate fully in all activities

The Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Rugby Union whether it's the children or the 14's plus course aims to develop a coach's 'How to Coach' skills as well as improve their 'What to coach Skills'.

UKCC Level 2 in Coaching Rugby Union

Building on the Level 1 Award the Level 2 Course develops greater depth of knowledge of the game of rugby union and the principles and practice of safe, ethical and effective management and coaching of players of all ages. The course qualifies the coach to 'Prepare for, deliver and review coaching session(s)'.

The course is a modular course made up of the following units: Unit 1 - Rugby Union Coaching Principles and Ethics0Unit 2 - Plan Rugby Union Coaching Sessions Unit 3 - Conduct Rugby Union Coaching Sessions0

Entry Requirements: Candidates must be over 18 years of age before certification.

The course is 69hrs in duration (30hrs on course, 33hrs home study, 6hrs assessment) 4 Full Days. Cost £250

The course is a competence based course and involves on-course appraisal

UKCC Level 3 in Coaching Rugby Union

Has been designed to provide candidates who have an ongoing involvement in coaching rugby union with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to deliver a coaching programme and demonstrate their rugby union coaching ability.

The Certificate offers an opportunity for candidates to be given support to effectively apply the principles of performance profiling, goal setting and designing, planning and evaluating a rugby union coaching programme and practice.

It also aims to enable the candidate to create an effective coaching environment, establish supportive working relationships and manage the behavior of players and others.

Entry Requirements: Candidates must be over 18 years of age before certification Must be Level 2 (UKCC L2CCRU) qualified

The course is 40hrs in duration over five days. Cost £350

WRU Level 4

Welsh Rugby Union Level 4 Certificate in Coaching Rugby Union

By invitation only, taking the very best Level 3 (UKCC L3 CCRU) community rugby coaches, the WRU Level 4 course is designed to give professional and prospective professional coaches a meaningful academic qualification in coaching.
