The Under 13s were more convincing beating their Taff counterparts 29-0. In a lively first half the home side made their intentions know, running the ball at every opportunity. It wasn’t long before the first score came. Good interplay between backs and forwards saw the ball transferred through several pairs of hands before Matthew Marley opened the scoring; the try remained unconverted.
It didn’t take long before the score was double, centre Daniel Owen splitting the defence from half way and using his pace to take him under the posts, Tyler Williams converting for a 12-0 half time lead.
The second was to start with a bang. Straight from the kick off captain Shane Young picked up the ball spotted a gap and went on a mazy run through the visitors oncoming forwards, continuing the run down the touchline and crossing the try line to go under the posts, Williams again converting. Not content with one try Young was to score again mid-way through the half ad Cardiff & Vale now took complete control of the game. The visitors were by now very tired and the home side completed the scoring with a try just before the final whistle by Ben Coomer.
The Cardiff & Vale under 14s made it three age group wins against Taff Rhondda at Rumney on Monday.
In a competitive game it was the visitors who made the better start, hooker Alex Gibbs at the fore, twice taking the ball against the head at the scrum and going close to scoring from a tap penalty. But it was the home side that, against the run of play opened the scoring, Christian Walters touching down following a kick and chase from his own half.
Two minutes later the score was doubled when winger Jack Huntley scrambled over in the corner, a try that he converted from the touchline. Cardiff & Vale were still under pressure for the rest of the half though and Taff Rhondda got their reward just before half time. A series of pick and drives culminated with Bradley Llewellyn scoring an unconverted try.
Following the break though it was the home side that took control. Within five minutes of the restart they had scored twice. First full back Danny Wardall was set free to race in from just inside their own half, then the best move of the game saw the ball transferred through the hands only for Jack Huntley to be stopped just short, Jack Haines though was on hand to score from 5 metres out for a 22-5 lead.
Taff Rhonnda kept attacking but were unable to cope in defence, and it was Cardiff who scored again when Damian Atkins crossed in the corner. The home teams forwards by now were warming to the task on a cold evening and it was one their number, James Sheekey, who scored try number six.
There was still time for one more score, this time scorer became provider when a Christian Walters deft flick allowed Danny Wardall to race in for his second of the night. Final score Cardiff & Vale 37 Taff Rhondda 5.
